The Black Labrador served as a bomb-detection dog with the United States Marine Corps from 2009 to 2014, completing three tours in Afghanistan alongside his handler, former Marine Cpl. Jeff DeYoung. Trained to detect hundreds of types of [ex.plos.ives], Cena helped protect troops and save lives in some of the world’s most [da.nge.rous] environments.

After a hip [in.ju.ry] ended his military career, Cena was reunited with DeYoung through American Humane and became his service dog. As DeYoung struggled with PTSD and the [lo.ss] of fellow Marines, Cena remained by his side, providing comfort, support, and companionship through some of life’s toughest battles.

Years later, when Cena was diagnosed with bone [ca.nc.er], DeYoung wanted to give his loyal partner the farewell he deserved.
In July 2017, hundreds of people gathered in Muskegon, Michigan, to honor Cena’s extraordinary life. Dressed in custom Marine dress blues, the retired military dog received full Marine honors as he took one final ride through the community. Veterans, first responders, and local residents lined up to pay their respects.

Cena later passed peacefully in the arms of the Marine who had trusted him in combat and loved him like family.
