All dogs are beautiful on the inside, deserving of love and care regardless of their appearance.
Yet, some animal shelters have noticed that dogs perceived as “ugly” are often overlooked by potential adopters, requiring extra effort to encourage adoptions that look beyond looks.
In 2015, a dog named Bjarni found himself abandoned due to his distinct physical appearance.
This mixed-breed canine, picked up by animal control in Huntsville, Texas, had a unique look caused by a deformity that resulted in half of his nose and part of his lips being missing.
He bore scars from a likely animal attack, and his misaligned teeth made eating and breathing challenging. When animal control contacted his previous owners, they regrettably showed no interest in reclaiming him, leaving him behind.
Left in the shelter’s care, Bjarni was fortunate enough to capture the attention of a few compassionate rescuers who decided to step in. Anne Graber, the dedicated founder of St.
Francis’ Angels—an animal rescue group based in Texas—learned of Bjarni’s plight and welcomed him with open arms.
She pledged to care for the endearing dog until he was ready for adoption. Graber described Bjarni as lively and delightful despite his facial disfigurements.
Determined to improve Bjarni’s condition, Graber sought out experts who could perform surgery to reconstruct his face. She connected with Jason Balara from Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, who agreed to operate on him.
The rescuing group, St. Francis’ Angels, appealed for donations through their Facebook page, and supporters generously contributed $5,100 towards the surgery costs.
The procedure was a success, with Bjarni undergoing a transformative surgery that realigned his nose and sinus cavities.
This not only enhanced his appearance, making him “very cute and very adoptable,” according to Graber, but also significantly improved his breathing and eating capabilities. Bjarni emerged from surgery as a completely transformed dog.
With his newfound health and appearance, Bjarni’s prospects changed dramatically. He was soon adopted into a loving family, enjoying a fresh start and a much brighter future.
Graber expressed joy at being able to help Bjarni, reflecting on how different his fate could have been without the necessary intervention and care he received.
