In early 2024, Jenna and Randy, founders of the rescue organization Dog Squad, were reviewing the euthanasia list at their local municipal shelter when one dog’s profile stopped them cold. Bernie, a large, fluffy Great Pyrenees, had been found with multiple injuries, including a shattered humerus. His condition was critical, and he was scheduled for euthanasia. But Jenna and Randy couldn’t let his story end there. They stepped in, pulled Bernie from the shelter, and arranged for surgery to repair his leg, hoping to foster him through recovery.

Bernie, who typically doesn’t warm up to large male dogs, immediately wagged his tail when he met Atticus. The two sniffed each other, tails wagging, and appeared to find comfort in one another’s presence. Their connection was immediate and unmistakable.
